Make words out of random letters. Type the letters you have, or draw a random set, and see every word you can spell with them, from the longest down. Use ? for a blank tile.
How the word maker works
The tool checks each word in a list of about 38,000 common English words. It shows a word only if every letter in it is in your set, and each letter tile is used once. A ? covers any one missing letter. Results are grouped by length, so the best words are at the top.
Games to play with random letters
- Longest word challenge: draw 9 random letters, give everyone 60 seconds to write the longest word they can find, then check the list above.
- Word count race: draw 7 letters and see who can find the most 3+ letter words. You can roll the letters with our letter dice roller to make it feel like a board game.
- Unscramble: paste the jumbled letters from a word scramble puzzle to find the answer. To make your own scrambles, use the word scrambler.
- Spelling practice: draw letters and ask students to make 5 words. Then check whether they found the longest one.
Why random letters give better games
The "random letters" button draws tiles weighted like a Scrabble bag: common letters like E, T and A come up often, rare ones like Q and Z seldom, and every set has at least two vowels. That keeps every round playable. For an evenly random draw where every letter has the same chance, use the random letter generator instead.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make words out of random letters?
Type your letters into the box, or press "7 random letters" to draw a fair set. Every English word that can be spelled with those letters appears instantly, longest first.
Can each letter be used more than once?
No. Each tile can only be used once per word, like in Scrabble or Words With Friends. If you have two E's, words can use up to two E's.
What does the ? do?
A question mark is a blank tile. It can stand for any letter, so "plan?t" finds words like "planet" and "plant".
Which dictionary does it use?
About 38,000 common English words from SCOWL, a widely used open word list. Offensive words are filtered out, so it's safe for classrooms.
Is this a word unscrambler?
Yes. Type the jumbled letters of a word scramble or anagram, and the answer will be among the longest words found.
