Random team picker: assign a random letter to each team

Splitting a group into teams and giving each one something to work from — a letter, a topic, a turn order — usually means either drawing names from a hat or eyeballing it. Team Mode does this automatically: add your teams, generate, and each team gets its own random letter in the same press.

How Team Mode works

Open the settings panel under the generator and scroll to Team Mode. Add up to 8 teams and rename them to match your group (default names are "Team A," "Team B," and so on). Press Generate — each team card fills in with its own letter from that draw, pulled from the same fair, unbiased pool as a normal generate.

What Team Mode is actually useful for

  • Assigning a starting letter per team in Scattergories-style or word-game rounds, instead of manually splitting one shared letter
  • Deciding turn order or "who goes first" by letter, fairly, without a coin flip per team
  • Running parallel classroom stations where each group needs its own independent prompt letter
  • Spelling relays and category blitzes where every team needs a different letter at the same time (see our classroom games guide and word games guide for full formats built around this)

Team Mode vs. a random team name generator

This isn't a tool for generating team names (like "The Fire Dragons") — it assigns a random letter to each team you've already named. If you just need a fair way to split people into teams in the first place, name them manually in the panel first (2 to 8 teams), then let the generator handle what each team gets.

Works on the wheel too

Wheel of Letters has the same team feature — add your teams, and the wheel tracks whose turn is next after every spin, useful if you want the visual suspense of a spin instead of an instant result.
