A random capitalization generator randomly assigns upper or lower case to each letter in a string, instead of picking new letters. It's a different tool from a random letter generator, but the two get searched for together often enough that it's worth being clear on which one solves which problem.
Random capitalization vs. random letters
If you want new, randomly chosen letters, that's our random letter generator — it draws letters A–Z with upper, lower, or mixed case as a display option. If instead you already have text and want its existing letters randomly capitalized (the "sPoNgEbOb case" or "mOcKiNg" text style), that's a text-transform tool, not a letter generator.
Mixed case in our generator
Our letter generator includes an upper / lower / mixed case setting for the letters it generates — mixed case randomly decides the casing of each freshly generated letter, which covers most classroom and game needs where case just needs to look varied rather than transform a specific word.
Common uses for randomized capitalization
- Sarcasm or "mocking" text formatting for social posts
- Testing how software or forms handle mixed-case input
- Making a printed worksheet visually varied instead of uniform block capitals
For developers
If you're building random capitalization into your own project, the logic is a small extension of a random letter picker — for each character, flip a coin to decide upper or lower case. Our Python guide and Java guide cover the underlying random-selection logic you'd extend to add this.
