Letter Wheel: Spin the ABC Wheel
A free letter wheel and alphabet spinning wheel — spin to pick a fair, random letter A through Z.
How I Use This Wheel In Class
Every Friday we do "Letter Challenge" in my class. Spin the wheel and whoever gets the letter has to name 3 words in 10 seconds. Kids go crazy for it.
You can also use it for:
- Deciding who goes first: A–M vs N–Z
- Boggle and word games with friends
- Writing prompts: spin and write a story with that letter
Give it 5 spins and tell me what words you made 👇
What is a letter wheel?
A letter wheel, also called an alphabet wheel, ABC spin wheel, letter generator wheel, or letter spinning wheel, is a spinning-dial version of a random letter generator. Instead of an instant text result, you watch a wheel with all letters A through Z spin and slow to a stop, like a mini alphabet roulette. It's the same fair randomness as our standard random letter generator, just shown as a spin instead of a click.
Why use a spinning wheel of letters instead of an instant generator?
A visual spinning wheel builds suspense and excitement, making it perfect for live classrooms, party games, and group activities. Unlike an instant pick, this wheel spin letters format gives everyone a chance to watch the letters blur past before landing on a fair, truly random result, which makes it a better fit for a room full of people than a one-tap answer. Read more on when to reach for a spinner over an instant pick in our alphabet spinner guide, see our letter dice guide if you'd rather roll than spin, or our paper spinner wheel guide if you'd rather build a physical version.
How to spin the alphabet wheel
Press spin, and the letter wheel rotates through the full alphabet before landing on one letter at random. Every letter A to Z has an exactly equal chance of winning, no weighting and no pattern, so an a to z spin wheel like this one works the same as an alphabet roulette with 26 equal slots.
Alphabet randomizer for group activities
This letter randomizer wheel is easy to hook up to a classroom projector or share your screen on a video call. It provides a clean, distraction-free view that keeps the focus entirely on the game. Pair it with our classroom letter games or word game ideas for a ready-made activity, or switch back to the instant letter generator when you just need a fast pick without the spin.
ABCD spinner and A-or-B wheel
You don't always need all 26 letters. Under Letters on the wheel, switch to A–D for an ABCD spinner that picks a multiple-choice answer, A–B to pick between two options, A–E or A–J for a small group of choices, or Vowels for phonics. The wheel redraws with bigger slices, and each letter still has an equal chance.
Lowercase letter wheel
For early readers who are learning lowercase letters, switch the case toggle from ABC to abc. The whole wheel, the result, and the history then show lowercase a to z.
What the letter wheel can do
Whether you search for it as a letter spin wheel, a letter wheel spinner, or a letter picker wheel, here's what's actually built into this one:
- Exclude specific letters. Rule a few letters out — like Q, X, and Z — with the exclude-letters field (a quick letter filter), and the wheel resizes itself to only the letters still in play.
- Name your teams. Add and rename up to 8 teams in the settings panel below the wheel, handy for splitting a class or group into sides and taking turns spinning.
- Auto-Play. Turn on Autoplay and the wheel spins itself again every couple of seconds — no clicking needed for back-to-back rounds.
- Fullscreen for projectors. Fullscreen mode strips away everything but the wheel, so it stays legible from the back of a classroom or on a shared screen.
- Spoken results. Turn on Sound and the wheel announces the winning letter out loud once it lands, useful for pronunciation practice or when the room's too far to read the screen.
- Smaller wheels and lowercase. Shrink the wheel to A–B, A–D, A–E, A–J or vowels, and switch between uppercase and lowercase letters.
Would you rather roll than spin? Try the letter dice roller. It has 1–6 alphabet dice, a Scattergories-style die, and a 4×4 word grid.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as an alphabet wheel or letter spinning wheel?
Yes, letter wheel, alphabet wheel, alphabet spin wheel, and letter spinning wheel all describe this same tool: a spinning dial that lands on one random letter from A to Z.
Is the wheel spin truly random?
Yes. Each spin uses unbiased randomization so every letter A through Z has an equal chance of being selected, the same fairness guarantee as our random letter generator.
Can I use this as an a-to-z roulette for games?
Yes. It works well as a fair decision-maker for scattergories-style rounds, name games, or picking who goes first, see our word games guide for setup ideas.
Does the letter wheel work on a classroom projector?
Yes, the wheel is built to stay legible at a distance on a projector or shared screen, with large letters and a clean, distraction-free layout.
Is the alphabet wheel free to use?
Yes, completely free, with no signup and no limit on how many times you spin.
Can I spin for teams?
Yes. Add and rename up to 8 teams in the settings panel below the wheel, then take turns spinning — handy for splitting a class or group into sides for a round.
Does the wheel work in fullscreen for a projector?
Yes. Fullscreen mode strips away everything but the wheel itself, so it stays legible from the back of a classroom or on a shared screen.
Can I exclude letters, hear the result, or auto-spin?
Yes to all three. Exclude specific letters with the exclude-letters field, turn on Sound to hear the winning letter announced, and turn on Autoplay to have the wheel spin itself again every couple of seconds.
Can I spin a wheel with only A, B, C and D?
Yes. Choose A–D under "Letters on the wheel" to get an ABCD spinner, which is handy for picking a multiple-choice answer. A–B, A–E, A–J and Vowels are also available.
Can the wheel show lowercase letters?
Yes. Switch the case toggle to "abc" and the wheel, the result and the history all show lowercase letters.
